Book Translation

Some 80 lifestyle and reference titles translated from French to English in a variety of subjects, notably cookery, contemporary art and travel.

In 2008, having worked in the illustrated book-publishing industry for 20 years, seven as an independent, I was approached by two London-based publishing clients, who, knowing I was now living in France and spoke fluent French, wondered whether I'd be interested in translating books. The three commissions I received launched a career change. Since then, I have translated (or co-translated) some 80 titles from French to English (British, American or mid-Atlantic style) for publishers in France, the UK and the US, in a variety of lifestyle and reference subjects. For a list of titles I've translated, click on the link below.

I had the opportunity to commission Anne for a major project: the complete translation of a work of more than 300 pages from French to English. I can highly recommend her expertise in this area. Throughout the project, Anne was remarkably professional, and her interpersonal skills only added to the pleasure I had in collaborating with her.

Translation … and more!

Publishers often choose to work with me not only for my translation skills but also because of my background in illustrated book publishing. I understand the industry and I have a good visual sense (plus a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design). So, if I'm able to check (or work directly on) page layouts, it's a given that I'll ensure that the translated text fits perfectly and there are no ugly line endings.

In addition, on several occasions, I've been asked to take on the project management as well as the translation of an English edition of a French buy-in. For some projects, for example, I've commissioned new text (and in one case pictures, too) to replace existing content that was not culturally suited to an English-speaking market.
